- Call 911. Make sure to let the 911 operator know if you’ve been injured.
- Do NOT Move Your Car. Don’t let the other driver move his or her car, either. The position of the vehicles may be important to your case.
- Get the Other Driver’s Information. Make sure to write down the other driver’s address, license number, and insurance information.
- Take Pictures. Use a camera to document the damage to all the vehicles. Also, take pictures of the scene itself, including traffic signs and controls.
- Vital Information. Write down the date, time, location, traffic and weather conditions of the accident. Make sure to get names and contact information from any witnesses. Write down everything you remember about what happened as soon as possible. You may forget the details later.
- Talk to the Police. Make sure the police are aware of any traffic violations the other operator committed.
- Call Your Insurance Company. Notify your own insurance company about the accident.
- Call AAA or a Towing Company.
- Get a Copy of the Police Report. What the police report says is extremely important to your case.
- Call an Attorney. Remember everything you say or do following the car accident may affect your ability to receive a settlement – or the amount of money you receive in a settlement. Do not offer statements to insurance company representatives or investigators without first understanding your rights and speaking to an attorney.
To protect your rights after a car accident, hire an experienced attorney to evaluate and handle your case, especially before answering any insurance company questions.
